Minifellowship in Renal Ultrasonography

This program is designed to provide additional experience for those who have already received training in renal ultrasonography, and prior attendance of the Ultrasonography for Nephrologists course or an equivalent course is a prerequisite. These five-day programs run from Monday through Friday. Only one trainee is taken each week, and he/she joins the ultrasound service performing ultrasound studies. Trainees will also participate in the daily reading and generation of reports, operation of the database, coding, and billing. An extensive teaching file is available for study. Opportunities to participate in general nephrology rounds and transplant nephrology rounds are also available. For questions, please look at the frequently asked questions section below before contacting us.

Frequently asked questions

If I have had previous training in ultrasonography, is it possible to do the mini-fellowship without taking the 2-day course?  Yes, in certain cases. Please send a description of the training and documentation to the email above.

Can I reserve the week immediately following the 2-day course? These weeks are very popular and must be reserved well in advance. We usually only reserve them for international attendees. If you would like to reserve one of these weeks, contact the email above.

Can I attend a mini-fellowship for more than one week? Yes, if that week is open. Due to high demand, the weeks are sometimes not open. Because of the high demand, we usually limit the mini-fellowships to one week, but longer periods are sometimes available, particularly if they include weeks with Monday holidays. If you would like to do 2 weeks, reserve the first week and indicate your interest in the second week. If the second week is not reserved by 6 weeks beforehand, we will then reserve it for you as well. If one of the weeks is a 4-day (holiday week), then you can reserve both weeks.

What happens if I cannot attend? Due to the limited number of slots we have a no refund policy. If you are unable to attend, please contact us ASAP. If we are able to fill your slot, you will be able to reschedule at no extra cost.

Will I receive a certificate? You will receive a certificate from the Emory CME office documenting your hours but there is an additional $100 fee. In addition, you will receive a letter indicating the number and type of studies performed that can serve as documentation for certification by the ASDIN.

How do I get certified? Instructions and forms are on the ASDIN website.

What if there are not enough ultrasounds during my mini-fellowship? The goal is for you to perform at least 40 ultrasound studies (required for ASDIN certification) during the week (including those done during the 2-day course). Unfortunately, we have no control over the number of studies ordered in a given week and sometimes that goal is not reached. When things are slow, we will try to find additional studies. If you are still under the goal, there are 2 options. You may return for additional days free of tuition or you may perform studies at your location and send the images to us.

Is there a discount for trainees? No. The only discount is for full-time faculty in a training program.
